Motivation Monday: Two Little Mice

“The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.”

- Abraham Lincoln

Most of us are struggling with something, whether minor or life-changing.  If you’re struggling with something (maybe those new years resolutions?), this week’s Motivation Monday is for you.

The end result of your struggle depends on you, your intensity, and your drive. Here’s a short 40 second clip from Catch Me If You Can.  Christopher Walken tells a story of two mice. Their identical dilemmas have two very different outcomes.  What will your outcome be?

Sioux Falls Fitness Trainer Tip #1

Sioux Falls Personal Trainer TipIt’s a busy time in the fitness industry with New Year’s Resolutions. The gyms are full, which is great, but we want to keep it that way. The best way to do that is through education. We want you to know what works to help you reach the goals you’ve set.

In this week’s trainer tip, I want to talk to you about the importance of keeping a food journal. Dealing with personal training clients in Sioux Falls for the last 15 years I look back and figure about 60% of my clients got great results. Take a guess at what percent kept a daily food log? That’s right – about 60%. Here are 5 reasons a food journal will make a difference and help you reach your fitness goals.

  1. Nutrition is where 70% (or more) of your results  come from. What you put in your mouth on daily basis is the greatest factor when it comes to reaching your goal…or not.
  2. There is something about having to write down that you ate those 3 cookies that will actually keep you from eating them in the first place. Even if no one but you looks at the journal. When you write it down, it becomes real because you can physically look at it.
  3. We typically consume more calories due to mindless eating than we realize. When you write down the nibble here and the half a hot dog that your kid didn’t eat you will start to see how much you are consuming on a daily basis.
  4. It will show you where you are at compared to where you want to end up. To reach a goal, we first have to know where we are at. Until you write down EVERYTHING you eat on a daily basis, we can’t improve.
  5. What we measure and track we can improve. When you write down what you eat, you can start making adjustments when you run into road blocks. For instance if you tell me you are starving at supper time, which causes you to overeat the wrong foods, I can usually tell where the problem is by looking at your journal. Typically, we can add a mid-afternoon snack in to take the edge off your appetite and solve the problem.

These are just some of the reasons to keep a food journal. The main thing I want you to realize is that keeping a journal is a key to success. It is not to be viewed as a time consuming drudgery that you put off until the last minute. Once you get in the habit of doing it, you’ll find it’s quite easy.

Next time I will give you some easy tips on how to keep your food journal and some resources that we use with our personal training clients here in Sioux Falls to get them the best results.

If you are not satisfied with your progress or feel you need some direction with your nutrition, we have a great program that you should take a look at. It is our 24 Day Challenge. It is a nutrition-based program that covers all the bases necessary to help you reach your goals. This nutrition plan keeps you full of energy and your appetite under control so the inches will begin to fall off your body.

The program is on sale to kick off the new year. For more information or to get started on the 24 Day Challenge click on this link: 24 Day Nutrition Challenge.

Strike That Iron

This is one of our favorite quotes.  If you wait around to until everything in your life is perfect, you’ll be waiting forever.  Don’t limit yourself to perfect timing, because it may never come.

If you’re like most people, you might be waiting for your kids to get older or your schedule to clear before you start a fitness plan.  Don’t put off the healthy lifestyle you deserve or make excuses. A year from now you’ll wish you had started today, and you can. Set up your free consultation with a personal trainer who will keep you on track, or take advantage of the 24 Day Challenge which has step-by-step, easy to follow instructions.

Strike that iron this year and make 2012 your best year yet. Have a great weekend and a happy new year.

Get Moving!

Tryon Gym Personal Trainer

For a great workout that really targets your abs, Tryon Gym personal trainer Nicole Geraerts recommends knee tucks, and with good reason. “I love throwing this move in when my clients think the core exercises are getting too easy. It really helps mix things up and is challenging for my clients.” Nicole also notes that during this move, pulling your navel towards your spine will engage your abdominals.

 Knee Tucks

Step 1: Get into a pushup position using a stability ball.

Step 2: Tuck your knees into your chest, rolling the ball with your legs/feet,    while keeping your back straight.

Step 3: Slowly return to starting position.
